Affordable housing is no longer just a political aspiration - it's a key priority for national and local government alike, given added urgency by the current pressures on everyone's basic living costs and the credit crunch.

The rapid rise in house prices across the north-east had already been putting huge pressure on local authorities with more people looking for help while council housing stocks dwindle as existing tenants exercise their right to buy. In Aberdeenshire alone, the waiting list has risen from just over 4,500 in 2006 to over 6,800, prompting councillors to seek Scottish government consent for a freeze on council house sales in towns and villages across the region.
